Summary of the report

The report is devoted to analysis of the current issues that teachers and staff meet regularly when working with migrant children in schools across Italy, Russia and UK. The presence of migrants, among other special needs pupils, exerts further pressure on a working category which is struggling to stay connected with the modern society and its mutations. The increase in numbers is clearly evident in any national statistics, while backgrounds and cultural differences are unevenly represented in these countries.

The main goal is to review what is prescribed by the official agencies in contrast with the subjective perception that teachers experience in their daily work. The gap between them becomes troublesome for maintaining psychological wellbeing and sense of effectiveness.

According to the results, the 3 countries share a common scenario when using a bottom-up approach: regardless of the different school systems and pedagogical/organizational structures, teachers are expressing similar concerns and frustrations while exploiting their own personal resources with the sole aim to help students succeed. Resilience and personal values are also assuming pivotal roles when considering a larger population and a broader point of view on the global migration floods.

We invite students, HSE staff, entrance is free. Those wishing to attend the seminar from other organizations need to apply for a pass to Dmitrii Dubrov (ddubrov@hse.ru). Please, specify your full name and phone number.
