VI Summer School "Designing Feasible Cross-Cultural Research: Sampling and Procedure"
From 9 to 12 June 2016, VI Summer School "Designing Feasible Cross-Cultural Research: Sampling and Procedure" was held outside Moscow, organized by the International Research and Teaching Laboratory for Socio-Cultural Research of the Expert Institute at HSE. The headline teachers at the school were the leading researchers known across the world: Fons van de Vijver (PhD, Professor, Tilburg University) and Klaus Boehnke (PhD, Professor, Jacobs University, Bremen).
This year the main topics discussed at the summer school were:
- determining the sample size and an suitable strategy for sampling in cross-cultural studies;
- choosing data collection method;
- advantages and disadvantages of online and offline data collection, and using questionnaires and interviews;
- developing and adapting research instruments;
- ethics of socio-psychological research.
The work began with the lecture by Klaus Boehnke on the problems associated with data collection in psychology, followed by Fons van de Vijver’s lecture on the history and current state of affairs in the field of the research ethics in world’s science.
After that, the professors discussed the research projects by the participants of the summer school, giving practical suggestions on the design, method and data analysis in the form a small-group seminar and individual consultations.
By the end of the summer school, each of the participants received valuable feedback on his study from the teachers, allowing to improve it as much as possible.
