Features of the strategy of self-representation in the status-renewed political discourse

On June 14, the seminar of the HSE Centre for Sociocultural Research "Culture Matters" was held. Within the framework of this seminar, Evgeny Vladimirovich Bocharov, senior lecturer of the HSE School of Foreign Languages, presented a report on the topic "Features of the Self-Representation Strategy in the Status-Renewed Political Discourse.

The report explained that the strategy of self-representation is a certain style of behavior of a politician in public speeches, the purpose of which is to present himself and his country in a favorable light, to create and consolidate a specific image. Using the example of the analysis of speeches of delegates from Spain and Latin American countries, an attempt is made to identify discursive dominants - the root elements of the strategy of self-representation. One of these dominants - "we are the victim" - is a common means of justifying political and economic failures. The dominant "our people", on the contrary, is characterized by the use of stylistically colored vocabulary with a positive axiological mode in order to change the previous conceptual image of Latin American society as traditionally marginalized. The thesis on the homogeneity of the axiological space in external addressing is submitted for discussion.
