Modern Islam in the Caucasus: global and regional

On February 26, Akhmet Yarlykapov (PhD, senior research fellow at the Center for the regional security and Caucasus studies, senior research fellow at the Institute for International Research, MGIMO) took part in the “Culture matters” research seminar.

Dr. Yarlykapov described in great detail the history of islamization of North Caucasus from the Soviet era and until today. One of the major topics in the talk was whether the process represents an Islamic Reneissance or re-islamization of North Caucasus. The presenter discussed influences of Islam on politics, education, and other domains of public life.

The presenter also touched upon the perceptions of jihad and religious minorities and subgroups among the members of North Caucasian majority. The talk spurred active discussion.
