What are young people in Russia proud of and ashamed of?: The role of basic individual values

On March 30 Andrey Nevryuev (PhD, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Social Sciences and Mass Communications, Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation) took part in the "Culture matters" research seminar with the report "What are young people in Russia proud of and ashamed of?: The role of basic individual values".

In the last decade, there has been a certain trend toward disagreement in society on key issues of the cultural and political agenda. As a rule, it is associated with value differences between generations, but differences in the values themselves in one generation are not considered. The present study (N = 402) analyzed what causes feelings of pride and shame and how it relates to the values of one of the age categories - youth. The values of Conservation, Openness to Change, and Self-Transcendence were found to be related to which pride and shame factors are important to young people.
